HRH Princess Laurentien Of The Netherlands
HRH Princess Laurentien is an expert in literacy. In March 2009 she was appointed as UNESCO Special Envoy on Literacy for Development, acting as an advocate for literacy globally. In 2004 the Princess established an agenda-setting NGO named The Reading and Writing Foundation aimed at preventing and reducing illiteracy. She also chaired the European Commission High Level Expert Group on Literacy in 2011 and holds a range of strategic positions in the field of education, social inclusion, climate and culture.. She is an expert on child inclusion (participation), and established the Missing Chapter Foundation, an NGO that facilitates inter-generational dialogue between children and decision-makers in the public and private sectors with a view to bringing in the creative and moral voice into the boardrooms. In the Netherlands, there are currently over 100 companies with a Kids Council and several municipalities; she is currently running the no.5 foundation where they incubate and drive initiatives that lead to more inclusive, just and sustainable societies. The Princess was elected Dutch Philanthropist of the Year in 2017 for her dedication to ‘systemic change’ in various fields and is a recipient of the Dutch Majoor Bosshardt (Salvation Army) Prize for her dedication in fighting illiteracy. Princess Laurentien is also the author of the Mr Finney children’s book series (available in several languages) about sustainability and climate change.
