Dr Rachel Glennerster

Dr Rachel Glennerster is the Chief Economist at the Department for International Development, UK. Previously, she was Executive Director of the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, as well as Scientific Director for J-PAL Africa and Co-Chair of both J PAL’s Education and Agricultural programs. Dr Glennerster’s research includes randomised evaluations of education, health, micro-finance, community driven development, agriculture, women’s empowerment and governance in Bangladesh, Burkino Faso, India, Pakistan and Sierra Leone. She has written numerous publications on the above and has co-authored Strong Medicine: Creative Incentives for Pharmaceutical Research on Neglected Diseases and Running Randomised Evaluations: A Practical Guide. She holds a PhD in economics from Birkbeck College, University of London and has worked at both Her Majesty’s Treasury and the International Monetary Fund. Dr Glennerster also helped establish Deworm the World, a non-profit initiative that now reaches more than 150 million children every year.
